“But General Kirigan is back to finish the job he began. Kirigan is more dangerous than ever thanks to a terrifying new army of seemingly unkillable shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits. In order to have a chance of defeating him, Alina and Mal assemble two mythical beings that will strengthen her abilities and set out on a continent-spanning quest to find them.

“Back in Ketterdam, the Crows are forced to form fresh allies while fending off vengeful rivals who threaten not only their standing in the Barrel but also their very lives. The Crows will once more find themselves on a collision course with the legendary Sun Summoner when an opportunity for a lethal heist presents itself.

The second season will continue the former’s journey to new lands to keep Alina out of Kirigan’s reach and boost her power output since she and Mal parted ways to the Crows in episode 8 of the first season. Kirigan has developed his Darkling abilities further and produced new beings known as Nichevo’ya, as was revealed in the season 1 finale. These shadow creatures can move in the open, unlike the Volcra that live in the Fold. They will be challenging opponents for Alina and Mal to overcome.

The actor who plays Kirigan, Ben Barnes, has expressed interest in having Shadow and Bone season 2 “steer off” from the books, much like how season 1 incorporated the Crows into Alina’s arc, and that’s exactly what will happen. Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind, the co-showrunners, confirmed to EW that season 2 will feature both new material for readers of the novels to enjoy and novel-inspired storylines.

Ben Barnes and Jessie Mei Li teased fans about what to expect from the light and dark dynamic that is at play between their characters during IGN Fan Fest(opens in new tab). You’ll just have to wait for season 2 if you found their relationship in season 1 to be interesting, she said. The connections between these characters and the things they have in common are quite intriguing.

Barnes continued, “They almost seem to be telekinetically connected to each other when you read the books. However, we had to “sort of find these clever ways to work around continuing their connection and their relationship” because I think that’s quite difficult to depict in a show.

Nina and Wylan will join forces with the Crow in the meantime, but not to free Matthias, who was detained in season 1. (not deliberately, anyway). Fans of the books should also not anticipate seeing the Ice Court job, a significant heist from the books, in this season; according to Heisserer, it will instead be included in a later season. Nikolai’s Siege and Storm arc will play a significant role in season 2. In the books, Kirigan hires Lantsov to accompany him through the True Sea as he searches for the Rusalye, a legendary dragon. Lantsov poses as Sturmhond, a pirate captain (also known as a Privateer). However, Lantsov eventually joins forces with Alina and Mal and engages in combat with them to thwart the Darkling’s master plan. You can anticipate that some of the plot will be directly adapted.

Along with Novyi Zem, we’ll also go to Shu Han and Hellgate, two other fan favourites. Established fans will be well aware of the significance of this location for some of our heroes because it is a Kerch prison on the tiny island of Terrenjel, which is outside of Ketterdam.
